Tech Tuesday: Check Library Availability While Browsing the Internet

Have you ever been browsing Amazon or Goodreads and wondered if Suffolk Public Library has that book? Well now you can with Library Extension for Chrome! With this free extension installed, you can see if Suffolk Public Library has a book without opening another window or tab.


Using the Chrome browser, just go to the Chrome Web Store and search for “Library Extension.”

Click the blue Add To Chrome button for Library Extension. In the pop up window, click Add Extension.

A Library Extension icon should now appear on your browser to the right of your address bar.

In the new tab that opens for the Library Extension website, you can sign-up for updates and news for Library Extension. This is optional. This page also displays some tips on using the extension.


To set up your extension, click on the Library Extension Icon. Then choose your state and Suffolk Public Library System. Then click the green plus button to add SPL. You can choose to find only print books and/or ebooks, or both. Then click Close. That’s it! You’re all set up and ready use Library Extension!

When you go to a site like Amazon or Goodreads and look at book, a box on the right side of the screen will display whether or not SPL has that book as print or ebook and if it is in or checked out. If we do have it, click the Borrow or Place A Hold buttons in the Library Extension box and the link will take you directly to SPL’s online catalog where you can put a hold on the book using your library card number and PIN or if it’s an ebook, click on the link to access the book.
