The winners of the annual Pilot Readers’ Choice Awards Best of 2018 Contest were announced on Sunday, May 20 and Suffolk Public Library took the gold for Suffolk’s Family Entertainment category. Five cities were represented in the contest and the public was called upon to nominate and vote for their favorites in a variety of categories.

Suffolk Public Library has become a go-to location for those of all ages looking for something fun and free to do in the City of Suffolk. The library offers different active learning opportunities throughout the year as well as larger community events such as the Amazing Peanut Chase, a popular citywide scavenger hunt coming up on its third year on June 16. The library is a place people go not only to find information but to connect with people and engage with others in the community.

As a family entertainment destination, Suffolk Public Library has a full calendar of events for the summer with an overall theme of “Camp SPL.” The library’s Family Fridays series kicks off June 22 at two local parks. From 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. families will enjoy arts and crafts at Bennett’s Creek Park and at the same time an outdoor field day at Lake Meade Park. Subsequent dates will host bubble parties, a rocket launch, archaeology class and more rotating between parks and library locations.

The Camp SPL Sizzling Saturdays series calls on all ages to come out and participate in events as a community. Events range from the library’s annual Pre-4th of July Cookout at Morgan Memorial Library to new events such as a Sustainability Fair at Chuckatuck Library and a Car Show in downtown Suffolk. The series will conclude on August 4 with the Camp SPL Finale Carnival in downtown Suffolk including a petting zoo, carnival games, pie eating contest, talent show, and more.
